I had the strangest experience in Customs: I had no experience. I took my bags, headed to the exit, saw where I thought Customs was… and then I was suddenly in the main terminal, with no stamp on my passport, no one asking me questions about whether I had stuff to declare, nothing. I was so discombobulated by the experience I found a Customs official (working at the VAT desk) and asked if I missed something. No, they said, it’s all right, welcome to Denmark.

I’m still half expecting to get into trouble on the way out, for not having a visa or at least having my passport stamped. I’ve never entered a country like this. After thirty-plus years of having to run the gauntlet of immigration and customs, to just walk out of the international terminal into an unsecured area– it’s weird.

But, people design airports to direct people through certain specific channels, and to make sure that they go through certain passage-points. So if I could walk out without getting my passport stamped, it’s not my fault. And I’ll stick to that when I have trouble getting back into the United States on Thursday.
